Sanchez Brothers
Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal
In collaboration with the Sanchez Brothers and Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, The Workshop was one of the 40 participants in the making of Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything, the first major exhibit dedicated to the life and art of Leonard Cohen.
This exhibit focused the influence Cohen has had on a number of artists from different disciplines and generations.
The Sanchez Brothers wanted to recreate the last photograph taken of Cohen before his death in 2016. The photo was taken from is home in Los Angeles. We reconstructed his street digitally with 2D and 3D techniques and created a hologram of Leonard himself. The hologram was a mix of live footage of an actor and 3D modelling. We studied hundreds of photos and videos to model and animate Cohen as accurately as possible. Finally, our work was displayed through a physical space mirroring his real home.
Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything is made up of 20 pieces of work, featuring 40 artists and will be touring world wide in 10 countries.

The bee-man was entirely built in 3D as was much of the house and all of its nooks and cranny’s (to have the realistic 3D bee collisions), We created a complex particle system, and painstakingly animated it – one bee at a time. Okay, many thousand bees at a time.

Working with Director Ben Steiger Levine and LA-based practical effects house, Spectral Motion, we produced this Sprite commercial featuring the musician Drake.
The process included creating both 3D generated and live action and the seamless integration of the two. It began with a complete body scan of Drake. We then created a 3D model of him and cut him into the pieces we wanted to move. The model was then sent to the effects house and they created an animatronic puppet of Drake. On set we used a motion control camera and perfectly aligned Drake's last position to match the robot clone of him. Using the same camera movements we shot the puppet exploding. In post, we regenerated the footage of Drake to align with the movement of the robotic puppet and created the 3D liquid simulation of the water moving through him.

We collaborated with Silent Partners who designed and conceived the content for Katy Perry's Witness: The Tour which was a whirlwind of 80s infused aesthetics, with a playful approach to visual conception.
We worked on the Intro of the show as well as the track Tsunami.
For the Intro content we recreated Katy's eye and had it looking around at the audience members. We combined a 2D digital painting of the iris with a 3D model of the eye, mapping its movement to live action footage taken by our in-house artist. We then digitally metamorphosized the eye to enter the colourful and whimsical universe of Katy Perry.
Tsunami involved using live footage of Katy Perry shot on a green screen at a high frame rate to emulate the physics of water. We integrated her into an underwater world of 1980s cyberpunk colors and light.
Witness: The Tour is travelling worldwide and was included in Pollstar's "2017 Year-End Top 100 Worldwide Tours" list.

We were asked to create an animated matte painting as a backdrop to the films set for feature film Ville-Marie. They wanted the painting to be over the top, almost surreal in its vibrance. We created one for the daytime, magic hour, and sunset.
On set, we used 4 different projectors that were perfectly sewn together using projection mapping, to cover the enormous space.

The Real T.rex with Mr. Chris Packham (US - Rediscovering T.rex)
Mark Everest & Martin Williams / Cineflix & Talesmith
We had the pleasure of producing the CGI for Talesmith and Cineflix’s The Real T.rex with Chris Packham (US - Rediscovering T.rex) which was shown on BBC, CBC and France TV.
This 60-minute documentary explores one of the greatest and most misrepresented predators in our history, so accuracy was of the utmost importance. We worked closely with palaeontologists and scientists from the UK and North America who guided our 3D modelling and animation. We studied and modelled everything from the skeletal and muscular anatomy of the T-Rex to its to feathers, skin colour and physiological behaviour.

Title Sequence
Sphere Media Plus
We recently embarked on a wonderful adventure for CBC's This Life, premiering October 5th 2015. Sphere Media asked us to create the opening title sequence for the newly adapted show based on Nouvelle Addresse. We created this from concept to materialization all in house at The Workshop.
We knew from the beginning that we wanted to create something honest and that could encapsulate numerous aspects of life. We wanted to create something that would not only capture the city of Montreal but the This Life family specifically. Lead by Director of Photography and Editor Vinoth Varatharajan, we decided to do three weeks of shooting in multiple locations of Montreal and be on set of This Life to capture the characters of the show "off camera" Essentially we allowed the city and the real people of the show to give us the magic and honesty we wanted to depict.
In the editing room we created the short by creating as many match cut edits as possible, to create this illusion of having one continuous shot. So we would match the Westmount library with Tammys bird cages in the Mile End, the Jacques Cartier Bridge fireworks with sparklers on the train tracks of Rosemont, etc. We could have gone on and on with this project, with so many combinations of images.
With Sphere Media Productions we are proud to present our opening title sequence to the new CBC series This Life.

2015 Closing Ceremony Countdown
Silent Partners Studio
For the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, Silent Partners commissioned us to do visual effects for the closing ceremonies countdown. Azerbaijan has an ancient history of traditional carpet weaving, that has consistently surpassed the transitioning country. The concept of the video, was to travel through the country from its very traditional urban regions, into its modern cosmopolitan cities, with the threads of carpet weaving uniting the country.
We simulated the threads using a particle system and tracked the footage in 3D space. All the threads unite into the final countdown that was inspired by Azerbaijani Artist Faig Ahmed. We essentialy used the aesthetics of this artpieces to create numbers and animate them in 3D.

Livre Surprise
To create this Flamingo commercial we regenerated live objects into 3D models. We used the method of photogrammetry, where we took a series of photos of the sandwich, at all angles, regenerating a 3D model of the sandwich keeping the real texture of the object. On set we projected the 3D models into the live action shoot to integrate the objects seamlessly.
